for now, the only thing we're growing on this farm is kids - not the goat variety

Family Visits

reedcousinssmall.JPG

We enjoyed a visit from High Trail and his family, Planner and Bright Eyes. Talks, eats, backyard baseball, a downtown walk… We had a nice visit. Thanks, dear ones, for making the trip to see us and to meet Rosebud. It was fun seeing Doodle and Bright Eyes interact and play – even if it did get possessive at times. And (sshh….) we’ve all been sneaking turns with Doodle’s new drum! – milkmaid

Of Weddings & Dancing

We had the pleasure of attending a wedding in Nashville over the weekend. We thought about leaving some of the older kids with grandparents, but they all wanted to go. I’m so glad they went too. We all had a wonderful time.

The ceremony took place in historic Downtown Presbyterian church, which is one of the best-preserved examples of Egyptian Revival architecture in the US. Continue reading

Typical Web Video VoiceOver Statistics

Using the FLV format, my instructional videos use about 1mb per minute. This is a very high-resolution format (waaaay better than youtube) at a size of 480×360 pixels. This beats using SWF by a lot. I’ll be interested to see how the new silverlight format does on this.

The discourse in these instructional videos uses approximately 130 words per minute, which for me comes to just under 10 sentences per minute.

At an average size of 4.1 characters per word, this makes one quarter of a standard 8 1/2 x 11″ page of text each minute.

My videos average 14 words per sentence. The transcript contains 11% passive sentences, with a Flesch Reading Ease score of 80 and a Flesch-Kincaid Grade Level of 5.5.

Swimming with My Toddler – Getting Closer

Doodle is getting stronger in the water each time we swim. We’re closing in on the swimming season, so I’m trying to get in the water every day we can between now and when the weather gets too cool.

At this point, I’ve removed 4 of the thin foam pads in his Little Swimmer vest, and he’s able to keep his head out of the water just fine. So, today he swam with 5 pads in the vest. Tomorrow, we’ll try 4.

With Doodle being small, the Little Swimmer vest looked disappointing at first. I really thought it would be too big to help him. But after working with it, and helping him get used to it, it appears to be doing what it was designed to do.

He’s still enjoying jumping in the water and going under. A couple of days ago, he borrowed Sudoku’s goggles, and had a ball playing underwater peek-a-boo games with Marathon. – milkmaid

Swimming with My Toddler – Getting It

We swam with the kids yesterday, and it was really exciting to see Doodle making such quick progress. He jumped off the diving board for the first time. He’s on the steep part of the learning curve at this point. (He was wearing the little swimmer vest.) Marathon was in the water, ready to catch him if Doodle needed or wanted him to. He didn’t need help & was so happy with his accomplishment. “I want to do it again” and again, and again, and again….
