for now, the only thing we're growing on this farm is kids - not the goat variety

Signing & Spanish

In an effort to help the kids (and ourselves) learn Spanish, we’re trying to use sign language to help us learn and retain vocabulary. Learning signs has been easy with the help of Baby Signing Time, a DVD series my sis-in-law loaned to me. Once we know the sign, we learn the corresponding Spanish word and use them simultaneously. That’s the goal anyway.

That has been my focus this week. It is difficult to get into the habit of speaking the Spanish words that I know. But I find the more I do it, the easier it gets. It is getting into the Spanish (or signing) mode that is difficult.

We are starting a Spanish class at our church soon. Email me if you would be interested, though I think what you are doing is excellent. I’m a big fan of TPR (Total Physical Response) for teaching kids a 2nd language. We have also used Rosetta Stone via the public library (you can access it online for free w/your library card). I’ve gotten so lazy with Spanish lately. . .I need to get back in the habit.

I’d love to hear any ideas you have for incorporating Spanish into daily life. It has been so difficult to get in and stay in the spanish mode. And, yes, Rosetta Stone is a wonderful tool. It’s just hard to get the kids to talk to a computer. Hey. It’s hard for me to talk to one too…:)
