Soccer Success for Sudoku

In our decade of parenting, we’ve sometimes struggled with the role of sports in our children’s lives. They require time and money commitments, and while they certainly have value, it is easy for their importance to get blown out of proportion – for parents and children alike. So, while we play a lot as a family (badminton, backyard baseball, Frisbee, soccer), we were a bit hesitant to enter them in competitive team sports.

This fall Carman & Sudoku played soccer for the first time. Because of when their birthdays fall, they were among the oldest in their age groups.

Sudoku’s league was pretty congenial. There were a few good players, but it was mostly girls having a good time. Sometimes two girls would start talking on the field and the ball would roll right past them in the middle of a game. It was that sort of climate early in the season. Continue reading

Book Review – Robert Fulton From Submarine to Steamboat by Steven Kroll

I don’t order many materials from Sonlight, a homeschooling curriculum supplier, but I generally follow their reading lists for history, read alouds, and reading for the kids. We enjoy most of their recommended books, and most I can find at our library.

The library though, didn’t carry Sonlight’s recommended biography of Robert Fulton, Robert Fulton, Boy Craftsman, so I just grabbed a couple others from the shelf to try.

Now that the weather has been cooling off, we’ve turned the AC off and opened the windows. Unfortunately, we haven’t enjoyed the “fresh” air coming in the house. Some cats have been making use of the mulch around the house and are not doing a good job of covering it up.

My research says I should try the following: Continue reading

Painting Problems

I’ve read that there’s a lot involved in painting kitchen cabinets – especially because they require a lot of serious cleaning. Grime from our hands and grease from cooking coats the cabinets over time, and paint cannot adhere to those things. (I’m not ready to tackle cabinets…yet.)

When I decided to paint the wainscoting, I cleaned it with a damp cloth, primed it, and painted it. Marathon found some places that needed caulking, and in the process of doing that, the tip of the caulk gun pulled off some of the paint & primer on the trim piece on top of the wainscoting! This week — Painting Wainscoting & Laundry Room

I’m all about fixing up the ol’ home place. And I love being able to do it myself so that I can save Marathon’s time for the big projects that I can’t handle. (Think: removing a wall, refacing cabinets, replacing recessed lights, changing out the floor…)

So, what can I do? Among other things, I can paint. But not with children underfoot. For years now, when I’ve wanted to paint a room I’ve done it piece meal during nap time or after the kids have gotten in bed at night.

Now, though, my strategy has changed. Continue reading
