The older 2 kids started handling the after dinner kitchen clean up when I was pregnant last, and they’re still at it. I sometimes help out, but since we have a small kitchen, more than 2 in there gets to be a crowd. So generally, Carman & Sudoku handle the clean up, and later I scrub the pots & pans and do some kitchen prep for the next day.
So, here’s our nightly kitchen routine. Clean up
- run sink-full of soapy water
- grind wheat
- clear table
- put away leftover food
- wash & rinse dishes
- soak pots & pans
- sweep floor
- clean off fridge (we write on our old fridge with dry erase markers)
- take out trash if needed
- bring in flour
- wipe tables & counter
For mom
- inspect kids’ work
- soak wheat — put the following in mixer, mix, and cover for the night
- 3 3/4 cups flour
- 1/4 cup flax seed meal
- 1 1/2 tsp salt
- 1 cup buttermilk
- soak oatmeal (in fall/winter) — mix the following and cover for the night
- 2 cups oats
- 1/2 cup buttermilk
- 1 1/2 cup water
- 1/2 tsp salt
- soak nuts (if needed) in water & season with salt
- thaw meat &/or milk if needed
- wash pots & pans
