Homemade Baby Wipes

dsc06071.JPG

My midwife told me about this homemade baby wipe recipe. I first used it when Doodle was a baby, and I’ve kept some around the house ever since. (They wouldn’t work well in a warm, humid environment [i.e. an un-air-conditioned place in the southeast] unless they were being used fairly quickly, because they would mildew.) They are inexpensive to make and are ultra-gentle on baby’s skin.

The container I use is Rubbermaid’s #6. It holds a double Bounty roll cut in half. I’ve tried other brands, but I’ve found that Bounty holds up the best. Marathon uses his table saw to do the cutting for me. (If you cut yours some other way, I’d like to hear about it.) Next, remove the cardboard tube in the center. You have to strong-arm the roll here to get the tube out. I loosen the tube by pulling it away from the paper on one end – all the way around. Then I flip the roll over and loosen the tube in the same way on the other end and PULL. Put the tube-less half roll in the container.

Then mix together 2 cups water, 1 Tbsp baby oil, and 1 Tbsp baby wash or shampoo. Pour mixture over the roll. Pull first wipe up from the center. They’re ready to use. Keep covered when not in use, of course.

Hey! I make a similar recipe… but I add in 5-10 drops of Grapefruit Seed Extract. This prevents mildew/mold for as long as it has ever taken me to use them, even in the humid south. I also boil the water for five minutes before mixing in the other ingredients… maybe this helps as well. I have never been good at cutting the roll, so I just use Viva paper towels, in the select a size. The kids tri-fold them so that they come out of the huggies one-ups container that we’ve had for so long. Then I can just pull one up through the top… this doesn’t sound real clear… but I just haven’t figured out a good way with the roll cut in half like you have.

Thanks for the tip, ae. Where do you get your grapefruit seed extract?
