Not long ago I wrote about how much we enjoyed reading Ralph Moody’s Little Britches. We’ve since read the 2nd book, Man of the Family, and we’re now in the middle of The Home Ranch. This series has been, hands down, everyone’s favorite. The characters are real, multi-dimensional people, the writing is excellent, and each evening we look forward to hearing what happens next. We all enjoy books and have read The Little House on the Prairie series and most of the Chronicles of Narnia, but this set beats them all — “by a fur piece.” (Well, I guess that’s a premature statement since we’ve only read 2 1/2 of the 8 books.)
Since our library didn’t have all the books, we decided to purchase the set for our family. The best price I found was at Cumberland Books, which has a lot of interesting book titles for those interested in a simple, sustainable, agricultural lifestyle.
My father, who will turn 90 July 2012, brought home Little Britches when I was a young girl, then oldest of 9 children. My dad had been friends with Edna Moody, Ralph Moody’s daughter, at one point and our family eventually ended up reading almost all of Ralph Moody’s books. Although my father was a terrible alcoholic and was abusive at various times in our childhood, we all fondly remember reading the books as one of the better times growing up.
