A little under a year and a half ago, we were here, on the side of Llanquihue lake. Sudoku took these pictures.
The mountain in those two pictures is the “Calbuco” volcano. Historically it’s a very active and violent volcano, but as of 2015 it’s been sleeping for an unusually long 43 years.
Calbuco erupted this morning.
It was a big eruption. The smoke column rose over 50,000 feet into the air, and lava flowed as far as 15 miles away.
Sudoku did not take these pictures.
This one is from Puerto Varas, 20 miles away.
This is from downtown Puerto Montt, also 20 miles away.
Even though these pictures were taken at the beginning of the eruption I had to save them for last ’cause they’re so cool.
